Iron Playing Tips

Beginner Tips

Good iron play is all about making good contact with the ball. This means hitting the ball first and then the turf after. When using irons you should ideally have your feet being shoulder width apart with the ball slightly left of centre. With the ball being just off centre of your stance you’ll create a descending blow upon the ball, getting the most out of all your iron shots.

Intermediate Tips

The shank is one of the most soul destroying shots golf shots there is, and the most common cause is a backswing that is far too flat. Seven-time major winner Sam Snead provided a simple remedy for golf’s most destructive shot by asking his pupils to concentrate on pointing the club towards the sky on the backswing, which eradicates the flat backswing and stops the shank in it’s tracks. This also promotes a steep angle of attack into the ball, forcing the club into a better position at impact.

Low Handicap Tips

One of the professionals top tips is to ‘always check the shape of your divots’, as it gives you an insight into the shape of your swing path. The perfect divot should be oval-shaped and shallow in depth. If your divot is too deep, you are swinging on too steep a swing plane, and if they point off to the right then your swing is too flat.
